Earthsea brings together the experience and skills of three principle consultants; Richard Woolfe, Daryl Guse and Ben Keys. The company generally maintains 6 fulltime or regular staff and the capacity to draw on a larger pool of casually employable consultants. We only engage consultants through a referral or stringent review process. This policy ensures we maintain the highest quality of work, with a staffing capability to efficiently undertake projects of any size, complexity or duration.
All Earthsea staff are members of at least one of the following professional organisations: Australian Archaeological Association; Australian Society for Historical Archaeology; the Australian Association of Consultant Archaeologists Inc; Australian Anthropological Society; Australasian Institute for Maritime Archaeology or Society for Underwater Historical Research. Our consultants also hold post graduate degrees in archaeology, anthropology or a related discipline.
Permanent consultants carry current First Aid certificates as a component Earthsea’s Occupational Health and Safety Operating Procedure. Additionally, all our consultants are experienced in remote area work and logistics.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERTISE
Richard is an archaeological surveyor with extensive experience as an heritage consultant in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia. Richard specialises in Indigenous and historical heritage survey and cultural heritage management planning, having completed over 100 projects in the last seven years. In addition, Richard has worked in a variety of positions in the heritage area including a Heritage Officer with Northern Territory Government, Acting Director of Heritage for the same office and Review Coordinator for the Northern Territory Government’s Review of the Heritage Conservation Act. ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERTISE
Daryl has 20 years experience in archaeology and heritage management in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Victoria. This experience includes 3 years working for the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) in a number of roles including anthropological research and consulting. Daryl’s most recent project with the AAPA has been the repatriation of human remains to Aboriginal communities across the Territory.
Prior to working for the AAPA, Daryl was engaged by the Office of Environment and Heritage as a Heritage Officer. This role involved historic research and publication of documents for the NT Heritage Advisory Council and government agencies interested in heritage management.
Daryl operated a successful heritage consultancy in the ten years preceding working for Northern Territory Government. Daryl’s company, Quaternary, was one of the leading heritage management and archaeological organisations in the NT, resulting in Daryl’s deserved reputation as one of the principal archaeologists in the Territory. Daryl brings to Earthsea the wealth of experience and knowledge gained through working in the Government sector and over 15 years as a heritage consultant. Importantly, Daryl’s thorough understanding of cultural heritage legislation and processes provide Earthsea with a solid foundation to advise clients on related heritage issues.
Ben is the newest member of Earthsea’s principle consultants, and has been engaged in the company for the past two years. Prior to Earthsea, Ben has had several years’ additional experience in field surveying, excavation, community consultation and sediment analysis. Ben has worked as an archaeologist and heritage consultant throughout the Northern Territory, Arnhemland, Cape York Peninsula, Northwest and central Queensland and South Australia. He is highly regarded by peers, colleagues, clients and communities alike for his professional field survey skills and extensive experience in remote area work and logistics. Ben has published a number of academic journal articles and has been engaged as a guest tutor at Flinders University and as a lecturer at James Cook University’s Department of Fine Arts.
Jason is an internationally recognised consultant and researcher in Maritime Archaeology, having worked extensively in Saipan, the USA (including Hawaii), Hong Kong, Darwin harbour, Melbourne and the Coburg Peninsula to name a few. Jason is also a highly experienced field archaeologist and has been an integral component of Earthsea’s work at Pine Creek, Gove and Groote Island. Prior to Earthsea, Jason was employed as the Maritime Heritage Officer, in the Department for Environment and Heritage, Adelaide. Other roles have included: Technical Officer & Site Diving Officer, Flinders University, Department of Archaeology. Jason is also a specialist in remote sensing and ground penetrating radar.
Cameo’s skill set includes field archaeology, anthropology and Aboriginal resource management. Cameo has worked as a consultant for Earthsea while studying over the last 4 years, principally in Cape York Peninsular. Her previous engagements have included Cultural Heritage Officer for Queensland Department of Main Roads; Project Officer (Cultural Heritage) for Eastern Yugambeh Limited and Assistant Collections Manager for the QLD Museum. Cameo has published a number of academic journal articles and is highly regarded in the areas of anthropological research.
Leaanna has 10 years experience working with Aboriginal people across the Top End in a range of capacities ranging from anthropology and community consultation to community capacity building. Leaanna is currently a part time researcher for Earthsea and is based in Tasmania.
Toni brings to Earthsea several years experience in field surveying, excavation, community consultation and artefact analysis. Toni has worked as a consultant in the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia. Toni is also an experienced maritime archaeologist and specialised in remote sensing and magnetometry. Toni has published a number of academic journal articles.
David is an experienced historian and researcher who works with Earthsea on a contract basis. In 2009, David conducted a community consultation program leading to a cultural heritage management plan for the 171/2 Mile Defence Heritage Place near Darwin. David also works as a sub-consultant researcher with a number of academics and institutions.
